Things to do in Addis Ababa on a layover: five stops that fit between flights
Updated 2026-10-23

Short answer: if you can leave the airport, the five things most layover travellers do in Addis Ababa are: see Lucy at the National Museum of Ethiopia, take in the view from Mount Entoto, walk a corner of Mercato, sit down for a traditional coffee ceremony, and visit St. George's Cathedral. With four hours you can see a selection; with seven or eight you can fit all five and lunch.
First, the one check that matters: to leave Bole International Airport you must be admitted to Ethiopia. Whether that is possible on your passport and ticket depends on the current eVisa and transit rules, so check them on official Ethiopian government channels before you fly. We cannot arrange visas and do not give immigration advice. If you are not sure, our guide comparing staying airside, a transit hotel or a city tour walks through the options.
1. National Museum of Ethiopia: meet Lucy
Lucy, catalogued as AL 288-1, is a partial skeleton of Australopithecus afarensis found at Hadar in Ethiopia's Afar region on 24 November 1974. She lived about 3.2 million years ago, and around 40% of her skeleton was recovered. In Amharic she is called Dinkinesh, "you are marvellous".
One detail many visitors do not expect: the original fossil is kept in a secure vault at the museum, and the public display is a replica. It is still the place to see her story told in the country where she was found, together with the museum's other displays on Ethiopia's past. Allow about an hour.

2. Mount Entoto: the view over the city
Entoto is the high ground on the northern edge of the city and the highest point around Addis Ababa, with panoramic views over the capital on a clear day. On the mountain stands Entoto Maryam Church, dating from 1877. Allow about an hour, including the drive.

3. Mercato: one of Africa's great open-air markets
Mercato is often described as the largest open-air market in Africa: lanes of spices, textiles, household goods and handicrafts. With a guide you can see a slice of it without getting lost, and you decide how much shopping you want to do. Shopping and personal spending are your own.

4. A traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony
Ethiopia is the home of coffee, and the coffee ceremony is a centuries-old ritual: green beans are roasted over a small fire, ground, and brewed in a clay pot called a jebena, then served in small cups. On our tour this is at Salem's Ethiopia, and the coffee ceremony is part of the tour. Allow about an hour; it is the most relaxed hour of the day.

5. St. George's Cathedral
St. George's is an Ethiopian Orthodox cathedral known for its octagonal form, at the northern end of Churchill Road. It was named after St. George because the church's tabot (ark) was carried to the Battle of Adwa, and the present building was completed in 1911 by the Italian engineer Sebastiano Castagna. Empress Zewditu was crowned here in 1917 and Emperor Haile Selassie in 1930. About 30 minutes is enough for a short visit.
What fits in 4, 6 or 8 hours
- 4 hours: the essentials, such as Lucy, the view from Entoto and coffee.
- 5 hours: adds time for Mercato or a longer coffee ceremony.
- 6 hours: most of the highlights at a relaxed pace.
- 7 hours: all five stops, with time for lunch.
- 8 hours: the full day: every stop, lunch and shopping time.
These hours are time with your guide. Add time before for immigration on arrival, and after for check-in and security for your next flight. Traffic in Addis can be slow, which is why your guide picks the stops that fit your time.
Practical tips for a few hours in Addis
- Connect to the free airport WiFi when you land, so your guide can reach you. Our guides wait at the airport's only exit gate with a sign bearing your name.
- Tell us both flight times when you book, and let your guide know if anything changes.
- Entrance fees at the stops, visa, eVisa or transit fees, meals, shopping and tips are not included on our tour. Lunch stops are optional and you pay for your own food.
- Ethiopia keeps its own calendar, so some holidays fall on dates you might not expect. A guest who toured on Ethiopian Easter Sunday found the city quiet but full of atmosphere; your guide will plan around what is open.
Seeing it with a guide
If you would rather not plan transport and timing yourself, our private Addis Ababa layover tour covers these five stops, from 4 to 8 hours, with pickup and drop-off at Bole Airport, a licensed guide, a private vehicle, the coffee ceremony and bottled water. See tour lengths and prices and the full included and not included list. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your tour starts.
"In just 4 hours, we managed to see and experience so much: we visited the city museum, enjoyed a beautiful view of Addis Ababa from above, and took part in two traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremonies … This is a great way to make the most of a long layover"
